Sometimes a brilliant lawyer just isn’t enough…

In her new book The Interpreter s Journal, Benjawan reveals the story of her experience as a professional Thai and Lao interpreter, graphically showing how she works in legal settings including courtrooms and jails. She demystifies the conflicts that many Thai-Western couples face after moving to the US. Find out what happens when individuals who don t speak the language end up in criminal, civil and family courts. But this story is also a personal one, relating the author’s journey from humble beginnings in rural Thailand to become a professional interpreter in the San Francisco Bay area.

Read Benjawan s true life stories about…
- Her childhood growing up in Thailand
- How she acquired her language skills
- Her path to becoming an interpreter
- Why Thai women are interested in marrying Westerners
- What’s wrong with Thai men
- Thai-Western relationships after couples move to the US
- Differences in culture, language, value and personality
- Story of the author’s personal Thai-Western relationships
- Her life and work in the US
- Lao and Thai people in the US
- How interpreters work in legal settings
- Difficulties and challenges interpreters face
- Studying foreign languages
- And a lot more

This book is an entertaining and informative read for legal professionals, those who work with interpreters, expats living in Thailand and Laos or anybody who simply enjoys a good read.

Paiboon Publishing’s new app makes it easy to study Thai wherever you go with your iPhone or iPod Touch. One of the most popular books for learning the Thai language is now available as an iPhone and iPod Touch app. Paiboon Publishing again sets the standard for learning the Thai language by bringing Thai for Beginners to the mobile platform.

If you enjoyed our book, you’ll love our Thai for Beginners app. More useful words and phrases are also added to this app.

The content is the same as our Thai for Beginners Software. We have converted it to the iPhone app for your convenience.

You can study Thai anytime on your iPhone. This app is even more helpful than the audio CDs that accompany the Thai for Beginners book that cost $20.00, because you can click on a word or sentence and hear it over and over. The interactive exercises make it fun to learn Thai.

As the Thai community in the San Francisco Bay Area grows bigger and bigger in the last decade, many groups of Thai people are thinking that there is a need to have a concentrated area where Thai people can come together and build a strong center to spread Thai culture and boost Thai businesses. Although, there are many Thai temples and Thai restaurants in the Bay Area, they are spread out, making it hard to centralize like Little Saigon, Japan Town or China Town. A Thai Town could be an important venue to promote Thai culture and tourism to Thailand.

Why San Francisco Bay Area?

It’s on the west coast and an easy flight to Asia.

The weather is ideal. It’s a beautiful place to live.

It has international airports.

There are many tourist attractions, such as, SF, Napa Valley, Monterey, Lake Tahoe, etc.

More and more Thai people are moving to the Bay Area.

There are also big communities of Lao, Cambodian, Vietnamese and Burmese.

Proposed Location: Vallejo, CA

Pros:

It’s part of the San Francisco Bay Area.

Real estate is affordable. There are many big houses available that are less than $200,000. Thai people can own their commercial real estate and avoid problems of constant rent increase that Thai Town in L.A. is facing.

Low land costs.

It’s located between San Francisco and Sacramento, the capital of California.

It’s close to UC Berkeley, UC Davis and UC SF, and many language schools.

There is much room for improvement in the City of Vallejo.

Cons:
The city of Vallejo declared bankruptcy in 2008. It has limited its public services such as, police and fire department. However, Vallejo has a relatively low crime rate and a chance to come back in the next few years. That’s why real estate is cheap. It’s hard if not impossible to find real estate in the San Francisco Bay Area that is as low as in Vallejo right now.

What Will Be There?
Thai temple, Thai travel agencies, Thai Chamber of Commerce, Thai grocery stores, Thai restaurants, Thai massage houses, Thai kick boxing arenas, Thai cultural center, Thai bookstores, Thai music and movie stores, Thai language schools and other businesses owned by Thais, such as, auto body shops, beauty parlors, laundromats, etc.

How Can It Happen?
This effort has to be made by many sectors both private and governmental in Thailand and in the US, such as Real Estate Broker Association Thailand, Ministry of Tourism and Sports, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Education and independent agencies and investors. With the cooperation of all Thai associations in the Bay Area, a new Thai Town could happen in the next five years.

Paiboon Publishing is pleased to announce our new Thai language product for intermediate and advanced students of the Thai language “Speak Like A Thai Volume 7 – Thai Abbreviations and Formal Thai.”

Abbreviations are now popular and accepted among speakers of all languages. They are also convenient and easy to remember which helps expedite communications and save space and time. The booklet contains 150 common Thai abbreviations. Each entry shows the abbreviation plus the complete term, phrase or title and it is used in a sample sentence with English translation. It is also recorded on the accompanying audio CD.

When Thais speak or write formally, the language is different from when they speak. Formal Thai is very difficult for foreigners to understand. Most books designed for beginners of the Thai language do not teach formal Thai because it is not likely that non-Thais will use them. Some words are considered formal, although they can be either polite or formal and can be used interchangeably. The booklet contains 100 usages of formal Thai that you are likely to use or hear. Each entry is explained in English and also recorded on the audio CD.
